There are a lot of things to consider when creating content. You need to take your audience, goals, and metrics into account. But there’s an important piece of the puzzle that many forget to check: your authenticity.
So much of our content can be born out of comparison. We see our competition posting certain photos and videos on Instagram and think we need to do the same to be successful. But if we’re not careful, we’ll lose out on the personal touch that makes our brand unique.
If you never heard this before — or if you have, but you’ve forgotten — allow me to remind you: your wonderful, unique, quirky YOU-ness is your competitive advantage.

There is no one on the planet like you. No one with your combination of perspectives, stories, interests, thoughts, and dreams. Simply being yourself will set you apart from a crowd where so often everyone is trying to fit a specific mold.
When you create your own mold simply by creating the kind of content you like, you immediately stand out.
Modern-day consumers are all about transparency and authenticity. You’re fooling no one when you’re trying to be like someone else. Your peers, your friends, and even your clients can see it.
“Being yourself” sounds harder than it is. All you have to do when you’re creating content is ask yourself a few filtering questions, such as:
- Would I be interested in reading this?
- Does this align with my values and beliefs?
- Does this fit into the overall goal and mission I have for my business?
Another way you can make sure you include authenticity in your content is to share! Share personal experiences and viewpoints. Tell your audience about a time where you failed or learned a hard lesson. Give them a peek into the uncurated part of your life, and you’ll be rewarded with their trust and loyalty.
